Referred to as AUT
The Auckland University of Technology (Māori: Te Wananga Aronui o Tāmaki Makau Rau) is the youngest university in New Zealand. It was formed on 1 January 2000 when the Auckland Institute of Technology was granted university status. The primary campus is on Wellesley Street in Auckland's Central business district (CBD).
AUT Timeline
- 1895 – Auckland Technical School opens offering evening classes only
- 1906 – Day school is introduced and there are now approximately 800 students
- 1913 – Renamed Seddon Memorial Technical College
- 1939 – Largest day roll in New Zealand of 1746 students and an evening roll of 2466
- 1960 – Renamed Auckland Technical Institute.
- 1989 – Renamed Auckland Institute of Technology (AIT); Degrees and Masters offered
- 1993 – AIT holds its first graduation ceremony
- 1995 – AIT celebrates 100 years of education. Student numbers reach 25,000
- 2000 – AIT becomes the Auckland University of Technology
