Waiheke Island

Waiheke Island is located 12 kilometres from Auckland in the Hauraki Gulf and is the third most populous island in New Zealand. The island has become well known for its microclimate vineyards and wineries as well as its uncrowded, white sand beaches. Olive groves are also quite mature on the island and the olive oil receives good reviews and has recently won some overseas awards. To taste the local oil visit Rangihoua Estate on the way towards Rocky Bay

Oneroa is the main village on the island and is a moderate walk from the ferry, and an easier walk back again. It has the most restaurants and cafes on the island, unfortunately it also has the most real estate agents which almost crowd the main street. Artworks in Oneroa features a library, visitor information centre, art gallery, theatre, cinema, cafe, retail stores, music museum and a community radio station. Below Oneroa Village is Oneroa Beach, a long stretch of beach which is popular with boaties. If you walk further along the street, or on the beach during a lowish tide, you will come to Little Oneroa Beach which is great for kids and has a nice dairy that also sells coffee.

Other nice beaches on the island are Palm Beach which is accessible on the bus route and Onetangi Beach. Palm Beach is good for swimming and has a great kids playground a dairy. A smaller beach to the left of Palm Beach is locally known as Nudie Beach. You can probably guess what is absent here. Onetangi is a long beach at the end of the bus route. It has a couple of cafes that serve food and drink.
